Marks/Inscriptions: B. 375 Bennington , John (1812-81) came out in the Randolph and described himself as an agree. laborer but it appears that he was a bootmaker and carried on his trade at Lylt. In the Jury hist of '53 he appears as shoemaker Collge Land, Lylt. He took over Gees establishment in Lylt. after Gee bought out Pratt. He advertised in the Lylt. Times 15.7.57 that someone had taken his boat off the slip opposite the Mire and th sown, f on to the rocks and the boat was broken. His wife was Ann aged 32 ust in '50 and his family John, 12; Ann 10; James 8 ; Mary Ann 5; William His son re '9v was also a bootmaker and started business in '60. John Benning ton Sens lard oyster beds in Church and Chartered Bays Oct 60. He caught a 10 foot Shark Nov. 61. From these various scraps it appears that he was as much of a fisherman as a shoemaker. His fine lette bory Cost his life by falling into a well . He contributed £5 to the Wesleyan Chapel Fund - Anne Kaiapoi His widow Jesse Ann d. al Cha At some time he left Lylt. for Kaiapoi ; he d. there 9554 sled 8e8. aged8g. in '81. 22.10.96 He died aged 70 was buried in Lyl +Ceo LT. pass. list.
