Marks/Inscriptions: B. 366 J.H. Bennett. 4. He and C.E. Bud of the Provincial Hotel, Dunedin took over Barnard's Repository (Tattersalls) and Tattersalls Hotel next door in June 70 and started business as Bud + Bennett, stock and station agents. There was a big row in the hotel one night in May '71 and the police could not obtain admittance. The Magistrate took no action as there was no evidence of drink having been served after hours. But the hotel did not have a good name and this did not improve matters. In May 74 Tattersalls Hotel lost it's license on the grounds that it had no bedroom accommodation. There was a great to do and a petition was presented containing 590 signatures but the Commissioners said they had no option. They were C.C. Bowen, H.J. Tancred, E.J. Lee and R.J.S. Harman, all men who were "sans the licensees peer and sans reproche." Evidently must have got on the wrong side of the police. The hotel never had any bedrooms - except a few for a certain purpose: it had always been the haunt of racing men and characters not known for respectability. Bennet was now in low water. He had sold his stock yards in 66 to pay off a pressing creditor - Frost.
