Marks/Inscriptions: B. 318 Belcher , William was a member of the farm of Belcher and Fairweather cartagena contractors and a brother of Richard Belcher. He had told the Rhodes brothers hert Belcher and Capt. Ellis were still in the Crest which had drifted into a cave which was guarded by dangerous reels. Boats were sent from Akaroa and hay found that the two unfortunate men had clambered onto a shelf of rock in the cave when the wreck had broken up. All attempts to rescue them were def ale d. Besides the account in Tabs of B.P. there is a full account in LT. 30.10.68. The inquest is reported in LT. 19.11.68. Barkes conduct was strongly enticed at the time and the R.M. spoke strongly against him. The Seaman, Cunningham s evidence was against him. Barker defended himself LT. 16.12.68 and a letter from Georg c Anniston g of Akaroa backed him up. In 1 T. 8.12.68 a letter from Geo. Bishop the Okains Bay schoolmaster defended Barker nd cunticised Amn ingham evidence. A letter p signed Wari tas was against t Barker and noted that Bishop was not in court when Barker was examined .
