Marks/Inscriptions: B.24.2. Baylee Jolene (1832-90) had a grocers shops in Colombo St. North. Then he took over the license of the Criterion Hotel from J.W. Oran 3 o wigs e Ang. 69. This was the Glos.er St. Hock near the theatre. He was W.M. of the Canty. Masoni Lodge De .69, and the new Canty. masonic Hall in Manchester St. was consecrated at the same tii as he was in stalled. He organised a theatrical Company to came to ChCh. they mostly came from Dunedin. H . Fleury was leader of the orchestra. scenery, Chas Massey) T. Woods , mechanistic Geo. Ward. property master. Mrs Woods , robes ; Dolly Green, directness o t. 71. In June 72 he decided to re cani and redecorate the theatre and it opened 2 time 27. 3.72 with a Japanese trompe. For a long plan after plan fir a new theatre in ChCh had been formed and Collapsed, Beattie, Baylee and Hosteen held the ground lease and owned the theate in Gloucester St. They had various allenby plans for rebuilding. Ap.76, A meeting was held but hardly anyone turned up and the thing fell though for the time. They could not rouse ang public interest so they deeded to put up the money themselves. (selL7T. 6.1176) His Anterior Hotel was bunt down in Nov 77 but he immediately set up a Rump or ary bar . He rebuilt the holed immediately . He was a duct or of the C own Brewery Co Jan. 78. He was bankrupt af lhe end of '78 and after that managed the Royal Hotel for M.H. Oram. He was still there in T.S. Cous ous the artist drew 25 character sketches of notable Pilgrims for Coker to hang up in his hotel and Baylee was one of them . His death in '90 reduced the umber of survivors to 6. married 22.1.74 at St Likes by Rev. E. a . Lingard Esther Catherine Gridley wit ness J.W. am. He d. Barbadoes St. 4.10.90 aged 58.
