Marks/Inscriptions: B. 236 Barter, Rev. Mathew ( 1812- came out in the Gains borough and was welcomed by a gathering at the Methodist Free church at St Asaph IndI o May 68 The Rev. T. . Fisher was the principal speaker . He had , been a musson ary in the West Indes and later a prominent previously b reformer in the Methodist Church in Enge He was immediately called on to be General Supt. of lhe mite Meth. Free Church which office he held fo r over ten years; he was the leading preacher of that dorn nation in Ch Ch He retired from active work in '76 and went to live in Fendalton. He was suffering from a relayed throat. He then went to live in retirement at Oxford doing what work he Could there. When G ng and Russell sold off their various properties outside , R.S. 135 of Longbeach Oct. 71 he bought part of "Lockhart bloch with a frontage on the Harewood Road and another frontage on the west and Norther end of Papanui Rd. He bought sections 15-19 totalling 24 ac at £25 per ac, John Boater his son advertised this land for grazing Nov 71. He was a man with some capital. He left in his wile 150 ac. of land to the St. Asaph St. F7rea Meth. Church. ; and to the Oxford craine he gave his library. He was born at Alston, Cum berland and served for 45 years in the ministry of his church. marr. Eleanor Evans who d. at Mt. Pleasant, Eas 1Oxford 4.6.92 aged 84 family.
