Marks/Inscriptions: B. 225 Batty , Joseph (1850 was born in Yorks. the son of Wm. Batty, farmer and Sarah Barr as, He came out in the Waimate in '75 and and was first employed by Charles Reed of Westerfield and after words Ly Gould and Cameron of Springfield. He bought a threshing mill from Reed and another engine and combine from Geo Gould. He arrived in the Mt. Hulton dist. in '77 and sold his mill to J.W. Oliver in He worked the second along with contract teams and coppery until he leased the farm "Whenuapai " from G. Coward. Afterwards he leased Craigie Lea. from Wm. Mc Milan of Irwell. The farm was of 1350 ac. and carried 3500 sheep. Matson held a successful sale of his horses and contractors plant at Methven ap . 84. marr. 17.1.89 at St Michaels Clara dau of Jacob Archer o of Yorks. She was born in Yorks '61.
