Marks/Inscriptions: B. 218 y er Bir toss on. Trent Bales, John William (1860- was born in Derbyshire, the son of Charles Bales and came out to N.Z. with his parents in '73 . They settled in Dunedin where he finished his education and joined the firm of Matheson Bros who dealt in chin a and glass. They decided to open a branch in ChCh and Bales was sent North to take charge of it. When he was mmeten he took over the branch and started in business as only i on his own account . He was once refused a small overdraft by one of the banks on account of his youth. Bales had an immense knowledge of the goods he dealt in and a tre love of fine glass and chirac of the fame of his shop spread far and wide and visitors firm overseas lave marvelled at the extent and quality of his Stock. He usually kept a fanon very large and expensi spices which he was relic airf to sell because they impres ed peop relive clients. It became a nonal thing for North Ds. visitors for the races o bury down substantial sums to spend at his warehouse . In henie 83 he diss. part. with R.L. Mc Len ag heer and announced that in future the form would carry on unda the name of John Balls + Co, Worcester House.
