Marks/Inscriptions: B. 201 Barwell , Samuel (1832 - in an interview LT. 6.5.14. he said that he was -1917) born in 1832 joined the Anny at 16 , went through the Hotter tot and any a Kaffir wars in 51-2-3 and then went on to the Crimea. He saw the charge of the Light Brigade and was one of the storming g troops at Sebastopol . He had clasps ad well I karma Balaklava and Alma. He also held the South african hidalgo or the 1850 war. His son was killed in the South african 9-01 War. He had ben inspected by the Duka of Wellington , as he told Gen .Sir Ian Hamilton in 1914. In the Jung list of '60 he appears as messenger , Govt. Buildings. He was one of the beedel shots in No 2 C g. Canty. Rile Vol. en '61. He drilled the first Volunteers in the Market Hall , ChCh. They used to go imo the North Park with their Brnswich Rifles. He settled at Loburn where his broham George had started farming. He spoke at the meeting at the Ashley Bank urging the Prov. Goo. to make the n the asher railway budge as hear as possible to Rangiora. He was elected to the Loburn Sch. comm, Oct. 72 and to the Ashley Rd . Bod.
