Marks/Inscriptions: B. 137 1. Barker, Joseph (1829- 1910) was born in Ivs9ill , parish of alston Cumberland and was educated at a private school . He worked in his fathers farm and then leat the building trade . He arrived in N.Z in the Labuan, 14.8.51 . and worked at his trade for a few years, He was undre Engagement to build a house fox John Stud holme on the Selwyn. Then he went to the Austral an gold fields where he joined his brother He had some success there. He returned to Canty. and b d some d bough s sections in and around Ch Ch. one of then was the West ChCh Sch. section in which he built a house . He sold them. at a profit and settled at Loburn in '6. His farm , Richmond Hill, was of 1450 acres. He gave two acres to the Govt. + the Bd. of Edie. School and he was a member of the Loburn Sch. Comm . for iver 20 years and was chairman part of theat time. He was a member of the Ashley Rd. Bd and ref the Norther A. +P. Assoc. He was treas. of the Sch. Comm . oc. 70. He was Elected to the Ashley ( Ed. Bd. to fill a arcane , Mar. 73. He se was a valued member of the Methodist Church and gave largely to Dr. Baade 's Himes. He spoke at a meeting caked to recommend that Cyclop.
