Marks/Inscriptions: B. 51 Baker, Charles (1807-68) according to the pass list he was a gardener and came out with his wife and family in the Duke of Bronte which arrived 6.6.51. He was then 40 and his wife Emma 37, family Emma 11, Francis Henry 9, Emma 8, Geo. 6. William A. 2, Sarah inf. The Lylt. Times said he was a dairyman with a milk round but fam. inf. is that this not so; that he landed cattle + sheep in Magazine Bay, once called Bakers Bay. He used to land the cattle on rafts. Mrs Baker did not like NZ. She remained in Lylt hoping to be able to go aboard a ship without delay. She came to ChCh after her husband died. He had a serious fall from a horse and fractured his skull. He left an estate of £10000. He d. 27.10.68 at Lylt aged 61, family. widow Emma d. Windmill Rd. 14.8.89 ag. 77 Winifred Alice went to Sales school at oxford and there met Jasper O'Callaghan whom Dora marr Athol Walker a schoolmaster of Irwell she married Greta " Alfred Nicholls son of Alf. Nicholls of Akaroa Mary - Wood son of James Wood Edith - Swan - North Is. Emma Harriett Hermes marr. David Broom Bowie q.v. fam. inf. pass list.
