Marks/Inscriptions: A. 2881 Ashby, Edward (1826 -76) was described in electoral coll of '53 as Hariet farmer of Riccarton Rd. Edward Ashby, Cabourn aged 25 his wife, aged 25 and William aged 12 probably hs younger brother ari ied by the Isabella Hercus 1.3.51. In Nov. '60 Ashby s flour mill with 25 ac of leasehold land , cottage and necessary buildings for sale by order of the vr baggie; part of R.S. 76 of which the worthen end bounded on the Lincoln Road. In bee. 59 Edward Ashley, miller , of horoe Lincoln Road save sod ence in Court. These items all apparently refer to the same man. Edward Ashley leased from C.J.W. Cookson of New bryen , Burnside Road his horse threshing mill which he brought out in the Su Geo. Seymour, He these Cookson own crops at Newbigin and the charge was 13 a bushel which was high . The farmer had to supply the extra hands. Cookson used to st on a high seat and , with A long whip, control the power which con stedman of 2 horses and 2bullocks . The machine was, of course, a stalimarnue one. This Story is also told of John Ashby and it is ust known to whom it shored be attributed con ely. Edward Ashby late of ChCh d.
