Marks/Inscriptions: A. 280 Ashby, David Alexander (1882-934) was the son of Aaron D. Ashby miller of Croydon, Surrey . He had been working on Banks Pen. when W .A. Wood q.v. who was a great cricket enthusiast offered him E mp loy merton in ChCh where he would he able to play regularly. He stayed w ith Wood for 50 years. Wood was a g ood All round auck ter Ashby He went with a Canty touring team to Aust in '78 and was 3rd in the batti ng averages and 2 " in the bowling. In a same Dec. 79 Public Schools and umber sites v. the World he made 112 and the side 4 61 the largest total ever made in Canty up to that time. He was captain of the Canty. Ram which played Otago, Jan '79 . Canty. won Easily by hine wicket?. Ashby made 59 and took five wicket s fir 42. He captained the Canty leam which played O9ago Feb. '82 . Canty was beaten in thes match - the ferst that Otago had worf0r some years . He captained the Canty. team that played Auckland Nov. 82, He succeeded Geo Watson qv. who died) as captain of the Midland Canty Cricket Club - Nov. 84 marr. 29.4.82 Mary Jane, oungest dau.
