Marks/Inscriptions: A.226 Anson, Frederick Arthur (1850-1913) born Nov. 1850 son of John Anson heir presumptive to the Baronetcy and later inherited it after the death of Sir Wm. R. Anson, D.C.L and M.P. for the university of Oxford, Warden of All Souls, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford univ. He was educated at Trinity Coll. Oxford (B.A. '72). He was a cadet at Orari Gorge and so was his partner Snow. In '75 they bought Peraki where Hanpleman had established his whaling station in 1835. Bishop Selwyn had landed there in '44 and preached to the Ngai - Tahu Maoris. John Walson the Akaroa magistrate had bought a 50 ac Section there, covering the site of the whaling station, in '51. Carew was allotted Peraki Station Run 52 but had to sell out to Capt. Hawtrey R.N. q.v. In '75 Snow and Anson had sailed across from Melbourne in the Omeo and bought the station and started to get it into order. Peraki faced south and they did wisely by displacing merinos by strong - wooled sheep. They dissolved partnership in '91 and Snow went to live at Horowhitu, Manawatu. Son after Snow left Anson let or sold the upper part of the Valley to Pinckney which left him about 4000 ae , all fire hed; it carried a little more than 4000 sheep. Anson stood unsuccess fully for Akaroa oa and Ellesmere . Wm. M. Montgomery who is still alive (158 ) defeated him for Ellesmere. He gays he was rst popular being obstinate and inclined to quarrel over petty points. But he admits he fought an election against Anson which probably makes him a bad judge. Akaroa Anson was chairman of the S. comm . president of the Farmers Assoc. and promoter and chairman of the Akaroa Steam Launch Co. which ran the lauch Parakiwai In 87 Anson opened up and formed a Midle track for the benefit of the Rd. Bd. and rate payers. He helped to organise the placing of the memorial on Flag Point. In '8 he was elected to the Akaroa C.C. oed was chair man from 93-99. In 1905 he let the station to A.P.
