Marks/Inscriptions: o . 141 Alpe, William James. (1863 -1955) was born at Ah land 13.9.63 probably the son of Samuel Alpe. When his fathe came to ChCh , W.J. he Set up as a hairdresser and tobacco.ist and a seller of fishing tackle. He was himself an enthusiastic fr sherman. Besides having plaster casts of by fish in his window he had notes on good catches. measurements of b.g fish and information about lter stale of the rivers. In 94 he was President of the Pua les Foot bare Crib. le of th Aft he left his Lander ser s shop he was license of the Waipara Hotel . Then he had a book seeing and stationery business at Waipukurau and Fielding . He be came avery Ken breeder , owner and trainor of Pr otters , Lord Dillon was a well known horse of his. He bought the Empire Hotel in 1900 from A. Francis. His wife Catherine Josephine d. al Sydenham 23.7.08 aged 41 This was at the time he had the Waipiata Hotel. he marr.
