Walter Smith Allen was my great grandfather's brother. My g gf was Alfred Smith Allen. Both men were builders. Walter's daughter Ada aged 1yr died on the voyage out, just a few days short of arriving at Port Chalmers. There was a measles epidemic on board. Alfred wrote an account of the voyage see The Star, Dec 14 1928. By A. Allen. 'Steamer Turned Back". The family came from Chingford, East London and the 2 brothers came out together on the Atrato. Alfred to initially just assist his brother and family during the voyage. I have photos of Walter and his family. His daughters never married and lived all their lives in Sumner. I have a suspicion his son was killed in WW1. As far as I know there were no grandchildren and I am unaware of any descendants surviving today.
