Marks/Inscriptions: A. 55 Aikman , John Camp bile (182 ) he was eight years younger than his brother Col. He was known as Sandy. Acland says they took up Mt Four saks before 185 7 and sold it to J.O.Lance in 1860. He arrived by the Dolphin 5.12.54 Aloe . J.C. was in partnership with - H. Le in and the Ferry Wharf ia had beeston was their headquarters; C.C. may have been with them. Fey were auctioneers and comision agents . He Cren had built what was for the timer a very large grain shed on the Heath cole capable of holding 350 tous of gain. This was licensed as a bonded Warehouse in Jan 62 . Wm Wilson and the Xp.Aikman brothers went into part in July 68 six months after they hael parted from Le Cren; and this warehouse was on of the ass ets the new form took over .I. was the first bounded warehouse to be licensed away from the port. It appears that the Arkans had taken up the license for the ferry, though the news was never published in the papers. The Prov. Coun. set up a committe to enquire into the relative merits of sea transports and rail transport fr on the port before which most of the merchants testified in favour f Sea transport. J.C. Aikman gave evidence that traffic over the Heathcote Jerry was 900 ; a year at 30 a herd. When the Heathcote Swing Budge was pened in Ap. 64 , the furry was closed. Marks/Inscriptions: A. 55 J.E. Airman and the new firm planned to build a large store and Arlington rooms thee and hold weekly sales of stock in the yards already there. In July 62 the form expanded into Aikman, Knight + Co and took in two more partiers wes taken ia - Anthony Knight and Thos . Allin. In Aug. 62 the firm was given the sale of the Leithfield sections by- Capt Leith, the owner. Allin dropped ont soon after this and King ally in '63. J.C. Ackman was one of the judges at the Horticultural Soc. Show in Mar. 64. He and his brother both pat down their names for the C. .C. which was started in this year and C.C . was elected a Lieut and J. a corner and later a member of the comm and ( adjutant. However greater, C.C. took a much, part in the histor of the C.Y.C than his brother. J.C. was elected a member of the Avon Rd. Bd. wher Rd. Bdo were started in '64, He repeated Heathcote in the P o v. Coun 63 -65. In Aug. 65 he sold his house and furniture and announced that he was going over to the Wist Coast. presumably to represent the firm. In '60 the partnership Caped and C.C. carried on business - mostly auctioneer ing from his office in Cashel St which Ballantyne + Co finally occup ied in Jan.'94. J.C. returned from the west Coast in 67 but apparently had no further business relations with his brother. Marks/Inscriptions: A.55. J.C. Aikman 3. He went into partner ship with Joseph Bailey, the builder and the y traded under the name of Imperial Stores , ChCh. They had a store at the ChCh Railway Station. In July 7 1 Barley sold his share of this bus inness to Ackman and went to live at the Wool scour at Waikuku. He married Marjorie Anne Williams at Ley mothers house, Market Place 28.7.58. Rev. Chas . Fraser marr. them. He diad 14.5.75 aged 51 at Colombo St. His widow carried on a shop till Nov. 77 selling wool , fancy goods te.
