The Canterbury Hotel, built in the 1920s to replace an earlier hotel of the same name, ceased trading in the early 2000s. Since that time it had been predominantly empty, but in 2010 the Magma Gallery began trading in part of the ground floor of the building. The Canterbury Hotel, along with the British Hotel on the opposite corner, had a reputation as a sailor’s hotel, due to its proximity to the main pedestrian entrance to the Inner Harbour.
