One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 7 March 2011 showing Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) Canterbury departing Lyttelton following the completion of her support role in Canterbury following the 22 February 2011 Earthquake. The photograph shows HMNZS Canterbury passing through the Moles out of the Inner Harbour and turning to port to travel up the channel to the heads. Visible in the photograph are a small number of local vessels and the Fire Appliances of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade parked on Number Seven Wharf, they gathered to farewell the ship and to thank the ship's company for their assistance. The photograph is taken from Bridle Path.

Researcher comments/remarks
The New Zealand Defence Force's involvement in the response to the 22 February 2011 earthquake was invaluable to Canterbury. In Lyttelton the most visible aspect of that assistance was the presence of HMNZ Ships Canterbury, Otago and Pukaki in the Inner Harbour and of Royal New Zealand Navy personnel on patrol and providing meals in the harbour basin. The departure pictured marked the end of the HMNZS Canterbury’s role in Lyttelton. During the previous 14 days she had made trips to Wellington and back to transport supplies and equipment needed for the rescue and recovery effort.
