One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 19 April 2011 showing the demolition of the Empire Hotel on London Street. The photograph shows the façade of the hotel supported by the framework installed to brace the building after the 4 September 2010 earthquake. A crane is being used to enable the east wall to be demolished by hand to avoid damage to the adjoining building.

The gradual unfolding of the process of building assessment and demolition meant that some buildings were rapidly demolished while others took longer to be assessed and their future decided. In this photograph, the Empire Hotel is being carefully deconstructed to avoid damage to the neighbouring buildings. However, some months later it was decided that the block of shops in the foreground would also be demolished rather than repaired. As each building was initially assessed a Red, Yellow or Green placard was attached to the building. A red placard meant that the building was considered unsafe to enter; yellow gave restricted access for the purpose of further assessment or removing supplies or equipment; green meant that the building appeared sound but further assessment would still be needed.
