The fencing erected around the Catholic Church of St Joseph the Worker shows the emphasis which was placed on public safety in the months following the February 2011 earthquake. Due to the widespread damage caused within the Canterbury region, many badly damaged buildings were fenced off while more urgent repair projects were completed. The decision making process about the future of many buildings was interrupted by the June 2011 aftershocks which caused major damage in Lyttelton.
