Background
After the 4 September 2010 earthquake considerable efforts were put into propping and stabilising damaged buildings with the intent to repair them. At the time this appeared viable for many buildings. However, the cumulative effect of not only the large earthquakes occurring in February and June 2011 but the impact of over 10,000 aftershocks continually weakened already damaged structures until demolition became necessary for public safety or because the building became uneconomically viable to repair.
