Researcher comments/remarks
The Lyttelton War Memorial, erected in 1923 at the intersection of London and Oxford Streets, was moved to Simeon Quay (pictured) in 1934 because its location in the centre of the road became a traffic hazard. In September 2013 it was announced that it would be moved again to the new Lyttelton civic square being created by the Christchurch City Council on the corner of London and Canterbury Streets. The Simeon Quay site was further damaged by a large landslide during heavy rain in 2012 and had become difficult to access due to traffic near the road tunnel.
