 Description
One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 8 June 2011 showing the site of the Volcano Restaurant on the corner of London and Canterbury Streets. The site is fenced with temporary fencing. The concrete of the floor of the building is visible. On the fence are two artworks, both made from woollen blankets. One, made from a cream blanket is a banner with "FAREWELL SWEET VOLCANO" stitched on to it in blue wool, it is decorated with two hearts. The other is a heart shape cut from a pink blanket with a bright multi coloured cord and an artificial flower sewn to it.

In the weeks following the 22 February 2011 earthquakes a number of hearts and other decorations appeared on temporary fencing, lampposts and pinned to local residents' chests. These were all made by a group called Lyttel Stitches, a project grown by members of the Board of Project Lyttelton who saw the need for people to meet together and talk, and who wanted something to do with their hands while they were talking. The hearts were created mainly under umbrellas and a gazebo outside the Lyttelton Library on London Street. The story of these hearts was documented by Bettina Evans in the book The Shaken Heart: Earthquake stories from the heart of Lyttelton.
