 Description
One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 8 June 2011 showing the site of the Harbourlight Theatre on London Street. The site is fenced off, on the fence is the same heart shape which appears tied to a fence in a different part of London Street in 2013.17.39 A white painted wooden cross has been placed in the ground with 24 [street number of the theatre] at the top of the cross, the date 22 2 11 arranged as a long division equation below the arms of the cross and the left arm of the cross is pointed with a purple tip. A logo in black is partially obscured at the base of the cross. The high walls at the rear of the site remain standing as retaining walls for the hillside the theatre was built into. Temporary weatherproofing of the Lyttelton Branch of the Bank of New Zealand is in progress to the left of the photo.

In post earthquake Lyttelton there has been a prominent emphasis on art in public places. The empty sections and temporary fencing have provided an expanded physical opportunity for creative expression. Lobbying by interested parties has presented the idea of public art as a transitional use of spaces within the town. Some pieces have been smaller informal responses to the earthquakes and seek to brighten the changed landscape. Other larger works have less direct relationship to the quakes and are the result of artists making use of the empty spaces to bring their work into public view.
