One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 13 May 2011 looking northwest from the Gaol Steps. In the foreground is the edge of the Lyttelton Rose Garden, the safety fencing around the Upham Clock is visible. Below this is the intersection of Winchester and Oxford Streets. Prominent in the mid ground are the Catholic Church of St Joseph the Worker and the red brick and stucco former Convent of the Sisters of Mercy .

The Gaol Steps are a pedestrian link between Oxford and St Davids Streets. In October 2013 these steps were closed and barricaded with temporary fencing because of the earthquake damage to the walls surrounding them. When they reopen they will provide convenient access between the eastern side of Lyttelton and the town centre where a road was never formed due to the topography. They run between the site of the Lyttelton Gaol (closed 1920) and the site of the Lyttelton Main School which is to be rebuilt by July 2015 to house a new merged primary school.
