In Christchurch's Central Business District many of the high profile demolitions took place out of public view in the Red Zone. By contrast, the demolitions on London Street, after the 22 February 2011 earthquakes occurred in the midst of the community. People often stopped at the fences to observe familiar landmarks coming down. Buildings which had been prominent places in the life of the community often prompted conversations between those watching and older locals who shared their reminiscences of these buildings.
