As Lyttelton's first main street, Norwich Quay was the site of many early government buildings. In this photograph the eastern wall of the Lyttelton Post Office (demolished September 2011) leans over the Lyttelton Telegraph Office. This building built in 1862 for the first public telegraph line in New Zealand connected the Port of Lyttelton with the City of Christchurch. In October 2013 the Telegraph Office (converted into a private residence) is one of three buildings left facing the town on the seaward side of State Highway 74 which runs through the Lyttelton Road Tunnel to the port.
