The New Zealand Flag at the Lyttelton War Memorial, along with those around the country, flew at half mast for several days following the 22 February 2011 earthquakes. Following further aftershocks the Cenotaph was dismantled. In September 2013 it was announced that the war memorial would be incorporated into the new Lyttelton civic square to be built by the Christchurch City Council on the corner of London and Canterbury Streets. This location will be the memorial’s third as it was deemed a traffic hazard and had to be relocated to Simeon Quay from its original site in the middle of the intersection of Oxford and London Streets.
