A temporary source of drinking water was needed following the 22 February 2011 earthquake. In Lyttelton and Christchurch the pipework, reservoirs and pumps all needed repair, as well as the restoration of electricity to power them. Within days of the quake residents filled containers from large tanks such as this one provided by the New Zealand Army. At these temporary water tanks hygiene was taken very seriously to try to prevent an outbreak of illness. Larger stations were staffed by volunteers who ensured that people collecting water had used hand sanitiser and the filling hoses did not become dirty.
