Researcher comments/remarks
When the Lyttelton Plunket Rooms were demolished in July 2012, archaeological evidence of the house of John Robert Godley, built in 1850, was uncovered. John Robert Godley was the Canterbury Association's Agent in New Zealand. Described by his wife Charlotte, in a letter to her mother back in England, as being ‘the best looking house we have seen yet in New Zealand; six rooms and a kind of pantry’, the house stood on this site until the 1940s when the brick Plunket Rooms were built. The investigation of the site recorded post holes and a drip line which showed the outline of the original house.
