Researcher comments/remarks
The design of many older commercial buildings was to build an imposing and decorative street frontage with lighter weight construction for the rest of the building. In many instances, this resulted in the collapse of the facade. Demolished within days of the 22 February 2011 earthquake, this building had been built in 1913 as Norton’s tearoom and Excelsior Dance Hall. At the time of the 22 February 2011 earthquake the building was for sale. It was partially tenanted by a souvenir shop and The Opportunity Shop.
