The archaeological investigation of the site of the old Lyttelton Post Office uncovered evidence of Maori settlement in the area including a midden, fire places and an adze. These finds added yet another layer to the history of the site which had been Lyttelton’s Post Office from the 1860s to 1976. The building pictured was designed by Colonial Architect William Clayton and built in 1875. Clayton also designed Christchurch’s Chief Post Office (built in 1879) which stands in Cathedral Square.
