Researcher comments/remarks
The design of many older commercial buildings was to build an imposing and decorative street frontage, with less expensive cladding for the rest of the building. In many instances, this resulted in the collapse of the facade of the building. In many parts of Christchurch there was severe damage caused by unreinforced parapets toppling onto the street below. The advice from New Zealand Civil Defence to 'Drop, Cover and Hold' during an earthquake recognises that the areas immediately surrounding a building can sometimes be more dangerous than remaining in a building during a severe earthquake.
