Light Armoured Vehicles and Light Operational Vehicles were a common sight around Lyttelton and Christchurch after the February 2011 earthquakes. The quakes occurred just before a large military exercise was scheduled to be held in South Canterbury. This meant that a large number of Defence Force personnel from New Zealand and Singapore were able to respond immediately within Lyttelton and in a very short time in Christchurch. Operation Christchurch Earthquake would become the New Zealand Defence Force's largest domestic deployment lasting 857 days with over 1,700 personnel involved. The Defence Force’s involvement officially finished on 30 June 2013 when the CBD Red Zone cordon was lifted.
