Researcher comments/remarks
HMNZS Canterbury was tied up in Lyttelton loading New Zealand Army equipment when the magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred on 22 February 2011. HMNZ ships Otago and Pukaki arrived soon after; they were also nearby for a large military exercise titled Exercise Southern Katipo which was cancelled and the resources involved redeployed to assist in and around Christchurch. HMNZS Resolution was also off the Canterbury coast carrying out hydrological surveying assignments and was diverted to Lyttelton to resurvey the shipping channel in order to check for damage. The Royal New Zealand Navy provided practical assistance in Lyttelton as well as transporting relief supplies by sea from Wellington.

The Naval vessels are best described in the following manner: HMNZS 'Canterbury' - L421,HMNZS 'Otago' - P148, HMNZS 'Pukaki' - P3568,( If you add these pennant numbers they will be distinguished from other ships with the same name, eg HMNZS 'Canterbury' - F421 - an earlier frigate ).
