The Lyttelton Timeball Station was completed in 1876. Its function was to provide an exact time signal to mariners so that they could adjust their chronometers (clocks) to enable accurate navigation. The visual signal from the daily dropping of the ball on the mast at 1 pm was replaced by radio time signals in 1934. The Lyttelton station was one of only five working timeballs in the world. The building was damaged in the 4 September 2010 earthquake and after further severe damage on 22 February 2011 the New Zealand Historic Places Trust decided to dismantle the building.
