One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 25 February 2011 showing earthquake damage to the corner of Canterbury and London Streets. The photograph is taken from Canterbury Street looking down hill. The buildings visible are The Volcano Restaurant, the Lyttelton Library, the Lyttelton Working Mens' Club (The Loons), and the Royal Hotel (obscured). Four Royal New Zealand Naval personnel on cordon duty are standing in the middle of London Street. A sign advertising a community gathering on 26 February is visible on the footpath.

Researcher comments/remarks
The New Zealand Defence Force responded immediately to the February 2011 earthquake; fortuitously they were in the opening stages of a large military exercise in South Canterbury and so large numbers of personnel were nearby. In Lyttelton, sailors from the Royal New Zealand Navy undertook cordon duty around damaged buildings, helped establish the local Civil Defence welfare centre and supplied it with food salvaged from the damaged supermarket. Chefs from the three ships in port cooked up to 700 meals for both residents and emergency workers in Lyttelton, Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour.
