Background
This building was initially built around 1864 as the Albion Hotel. After many modifications and changes of use, including being the Lyttelton Borough Council offices, a hardware store, a backpackers hostel, an earthquake demolition site and a petanque court. The site was purchased to create Albion Square, Lyttelton's new civic square as part of the Lyttelton Suburban Masterplan for earthquake recovery.
