One landscape colour digital photograph taken on 25 February 2011 showing earthquake damage to houses on the western side of Canterbury Street between London and Winchester Streets. The photograph shows large sections of a brick firewall which have fallen onto the roof of the neighbouring house.

The close proximity of buildings in Lyttelton led to the adoption of a local by-law following the 1870 Great Fire of Lyttelton that at least one side wall of every building was to be made of fire resistant materials. This effort to reduce the risk of fire spreading from building to building led to some otherwise wooden buildings having one brick wall. In the 2010-2011 earthquakes many of these brick walls suffered more damage than the rest of the buildings of which they were a part. The tightly packed arrangement of many properties led to some houses being evacuated due to the risk posed by neighbouring buildings.
