The earthquake damaged northern wall of the Anglican Church of the Most Holy Trinity shows a construction method common to most nineteenth and early twentieth century stone buildings. The exterior and interior of the wall are built of stones held together with lime mortar. The cavity between the two layers of stone is filled with rubble. While walls built in this manner have vertical strength, and can support large roofs, they have little resistance to horizontal movement caused by an earthquake, particularly as the lime mortar ages and weathers. The bracing on this wall was an attempt to stabilise the damage caused by the 4 September 2011 earthquake.
