Both buildings in this photograph were designed by Collins and Harman in an Italian Renaissance style. The building to the left was built in 1887 as the Council Chambers for the Lyttelton Municipal Council (later Lyttelton Borough Council, then Banks Peninsula District Council) and Magistrates Court. It housed the Lyttelton Public Library from 1978 until the Council sold the building in 1999. On the opposite corner the former fire station and library was built in 1902 and housed the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire brigade until 1967 and the library until its move across the road.
