Object Detail
The National Christchurch Memorial Service was held on 18 March 2011. This official memorial service was attended by HRH Prince William, on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, the Governors General of New Zealand and Australia, local and national politicians, representatives of local churches, Ngai Tahu elders, emergency services (including international response teams) and thousands of members of the public. During the service the names of those who had died were read out and the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand presented their Gold Medal to the Mayor of Christchurch “on behalf of all those people, known and unknown, who had put their own lives in danger in saving or attempting to save lives and rescue others or were involved, in selfless acts of humanity, so that their actions would thereby be commemorated”.
