The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch on 22 February 2011 shocked most New Zealanders. Memorial services were held around the country, many were held in conjunction with a fundraising initiative to send support to Christchurch. This memorial service was held in Queenstown on 1 March 2011, one week after the earthquake.
In the aftermath of the 22 February 2011 earthquake events were held in many parts of New Zealand to both remember the people killed or injured and to gather contributions for earthquake appeals. The Kia Kaha Christchurch concert at the Village Green in Queenstown was held on the one week anniversary of the quake. The Otago Daily Times reported the following day that the donations collected by the Salvation Army for the earthquake appeal amounted to more than $7796.
