Object Detail
Many churches and community groups in Canterbury owned older buildings constructed of unreinforced brick or masonry. The damage caused to these buildings in the Canterbury earthquakes and the cost to restore or rebuild them to meet modern building codes has led to the decision to demolish many, such as the Christchurch Chinese Methodist Church on Papanui Road shown in this photo. This Church was demolished in August 2013. The shedding of bricks and stone from high walls during earthquakes caused considerable damage and ongoing concerns about public safety.
