Researcher comments/remarks
The chimney that crushed this car in Strowan, Christchurch was thrown from the roof of the house behind it, showing the phenomenal force exerted during the 4 September 2010 earthquake. Falling chimneys could cause severe damage to people and property and were quickly recognised as a serious potential hazard during an earthquake. Following 4 September 2010, many of the chimneys in Canterbury that survived were removed and some were replaced with lightweight replicas.
Falling chimneys caused damage across Christchurch following the 4 September 2010 earthquake. The strong shaking was too powerful for the mortar holding the slender brick structures. Falling masonry damaged not only roofs but anything it landed on. The replacement of solid brick chimneys with lightweight replicas has become a popular practice to reduce the chimney weight from tons to a few hundred kilograms by using brick veneers and timber framing. Almost all open fires in Christchurch have now been replaced with other heating options to improve air quality.
