Researcher comments/remarks
The Aftersocks fundraising campaign was an initiative to support the Canterbury region following the 22 February 2011 earthquake. Cantabrians Justine and Jo Ottey developed the idea of producing a pair of red and black socks featuring a seismic shock line. They approached the association Rural Women New Zealand who contacted the NZ Sock Co, an Ashburton based company, to manufacture the socks. The Aftersocks campaign deliberately used a Canterbury based manufacturing company to promote business in the region, which had suffered a huge economic setback as a result of the earthquakes. The campaign was a success selling over 1500 pairs of original design, children’s and corporate socks in the first three days. All the proceeds went to support the Christchurch Mayoral Fund.
