One of the most immediate challenges facing Christchurch residents following the 22 February 2011 earthquake was the restriction on using residential toilet facilities. The restrictions were implemented due to the extensive damage to sewerage systems across the city, especially the northern and eastern areas of Christchurch. As part of the solution to this problem, 2,900 portable toilets like this one were placed on the streets of Christchurch for residents to use. To meet the demand about 1,000 portable toilets had to be imported from the United States and Australia. Many people had to share these portable toilets with neighbours for months whilst the Christchurch City Council worked to repair the damage to sewerage systems across the city.
