Researcher comments/remarks
Jason Pemberton, from the Student Volunteer Army organising committee, wore this t-shirt during the cleanup following the 22 February 2011 earthquake. Jason also wore this t-shirt when he travelled to Japan in April 2012 to inspire Japanese young people to assist in the recovery effort for the 11 March 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. At this time the Japanese writing which reads ‘Christchurch, New Zealand’ was added. The same phrase was added in Spanish when Jason attended the second World Summit for Youth Volunteering in Colombia in November 2011. This t-shirt was one of over 5,000 produced by New Zealand company, Mr Vintage, many of which were gifted to the student volunteers as a morale booster. Mr Vintage made many earthquake related t-shirts which raised over $100,000 for charities in Christchurch such as The Salvation Army, Victim Support, Red Cross, St John and the SPCA.
