Researcher comments/remarks
The White Lights of Hope lit up the skies of Christchurch every night from 4 September 2011 until 23 February 2012. This symbol of support for Christchurch was modelled after New York’s annual Tribute in Light to the World Trade Centre disaster of 11 September 2001. The lights were installed on the top of the seven storey Telecom building in Cathedral Square and blessed by ChristChurch Cathedral Dean Peter Beck and Kaumātua (elders) from the local iwi, Ngai Tahu. The large beams of light provided comfort in a time of darkness and hardship.
