Steel Rod: Hotel Grand Chancellor

Description
One twisted steel re-enforcing rod with parallel spine-like lines running the length of the rod; striations run in a circular pattern between these lines. The object was recovered from the shear wall in the Hotel Grand Chancellor, which was demolished following the 22 February earthquake.

This steel reinforcing rod was removed from the Hotel Grand Chancellor. One of the tallest buildings in Christchurch, the hotel developed a noticeable lean after the 22 February 2011 earthquake, which was major concern as it posed a significant danger to rescue workers, people and properties within an entire block of the building. The Hotel Grand Chancellor, built in 1986, was the first high rise building to be demolished in Christchurch following the earthquake, taking until May 2012 to complete the level by level deconstruction. This structurally important rod demonstrates the force of damage sustained by the shear wall on the south-east corner of the hotel.
